Trip Report: Hyatt Andaz Costa Rica Resort at Peninsula Papagayo

My love of photography was born on my first trip to Costa Rica. Knowing all of the incredible animals I’d see there, I rented a telephoto lens. It was about as long as an actual telescope, but man it was so worth it. Sloths, birds, monkeys…I was taking photos of everything. And I still really treasure those photos, not because they are especially great, but because of the memories they hold.

Since my first trip, Costa Rica has become one of my favorite vacation destinations. And today I want to share one of my favorite vacation spots there with you. If you’re considering booking a trip to Costa Rica, I hope this information helps you out.

WHAT:

Andaz Costa Rica Resort at Peninsula Papagayo.

WHY:

Why do I recommend it?

  • The range of activities: Think of the Andaz Papagayo as a vacation choose-your-own adventure. Would you like to take a barista class or a yoga class? Dine under the stars or order room service? Wake up early to snorkel the reef or sleep in then hit the spa? Whatever you want out of your vacation, this place can provide it. Travel blogger The Points Guy has a great article from a few years ago about some of his favorite things to do there:

  • The rooms: A cozy bed, Netflix, and air conditioning when I need to feel at home. A stunning view, tons of natural light, and a furnished balcony porch to relax on when I want to remember I’m in Costa Rica.

  • The wildlife: Because of Costa Rica’s rich biodiversity and commitment to conservation, a natural paradise is right outside your door. My wife and I loved watching a troop of howler monkeys pass by each morning and night, spotting different species of birds and butterflies, and swimming with pufferfish and eagle rays right off the beach.

How great is it to watch monkeys from the comfort of the bed room

** First-Timer Tip: Take advantage of the resort’s free spaces.**

If you are looking to maximize value on your trip, don’t overlook the variety of no-cost activities available to you. Do some yoga on the open-air workout deck. Relax in the immersion pool or sauna at the spa. Take a sunset walk to the marina and listen for birds and monkeys.

WHO:

Who would love this property?

  • Families: Traveling with family can be tough, especially when everyone has different needs and interests. But Andaz does a great job with that, and kids can stay just as busy with all the fun activities just for them at Cambi, the Kids’ Club. It’s open to ages 4-12. The hotel also offers babysitting services.

  • Couples: Enjoy a romantic dinner at Ostra, or catch some live music at Chao Pescao. Grab an indulgent coffee or cocktail. Book a massage or relax at the adults-only pool. Although the resort is family-friendly, it would make a great choice for a honeymoon or anniversary trip.

  • Luxury Travelers: Confession: On one trip to Andaz, my wife and I ordered room service every single night. We ordered every dessert on the menu at least once. If you are (or are traveling with) someone who thinks this sounds like fun, the Andaz Papagayo will be a great fit. It’s somewhere that prioritizes great service, modern conveniences, and total comfort and relaxation.

Who might want to pass on it?

  • Budget Travelers: Because you’ll be on the hotel’s grounds for the majority of your stay, you’ll pay resort prices for your shopping and dining…which aren’t exactly easy on the wallet.

  • Authenticity Seekers: If you want to experience the Pura Vida life by exploring towns, trying local restaurants, and engaging with nature at its most wild, consider staying somewhere more geared toward that, OR….

**First-Timer Tip** Book a local adventure with Guanacaste Traveler**

If you want to enjoy the Andaz but not miss out on all of the natural wonders of the province of Guanacaste, reach out to Jose, the manager of Guanacaste Traveler, to book an excursion. We’ve used his service on all of our Costa Rica trips. He and his local team have a deep knowledge and love for this area. They are trustworthy, friendly, and reliable. And check out all of his recent adventures on IG

WHERE:

Where is it located?

The Andaz Papagayo is (as the name suggests) on the Papagayo Peninsula. Located on the North Pacific coast in the province of Guanacaste, this area is a favorite for vacationers seeking adventure and luxury.

The nearest airport to the hotel is in Liberia (LIR). Although flights from the US usually cost more to LIR than to Costa Rica’s other major airport in San Jose (SJO), I’ve found that Liberia offers a calmer, easier airport experience.

Plus its proximity to the Andaz will save you time and money on ground transportation. And if you follow our advice and book Guanacaste Traveler, your driver will be waiting to welcome you. Then settle in for a 35-minute drive (in a blissfully air-conditioned van) to your destination.

Once you’re on property, you’ll be walking distance from two stunning beaches (Sombrero Claro and Sombrero Oscuro) and the marina. You can also take a free shuttle to the Andaz Beach House and to the neighboring Four Seasons Resort.

WHEN: When should you book your trip?

Costa Rica has distinct rainy and dry seasons, and Guanacaste (where the Andaz is located) has a longer dry season than other provinces.

** First-Timer Tip: Avoid seasonal confusion.**

Costa Ricans refer to the rainy season (approximately May - mid November) as winter, and the dry season (mid-November to April) as summer.

The good news? You can’t go wrong. But your choice will affect your trip experience. Here are some things to consider.

  • Rainy Season: Everything is green and lush; less crowded and off-season rates; as you plan activities and excursions, expect rain for a few hours each day

  • Dry Season: The high season for tourism; expect bigger crowds and higher rates; a great time for bird watchers as migratory species pass through; enjoy tropical weather while it’s chillier at home

Our pick: The best month to visit Guanacaste, Costa Rica is August. It’s in the heart of the rainy season, so you’ll be surrounded by vibrant green trees and tropical flowers.

Don’t let the rain get you down – just schedule activities around forecasted showers. And when the rain comes, enjoy an afternoon nap or some reading time on your covered porch.

Since summer vacation falls during June and July for many families, August is a better pick if you want to feel like you have the resort and all of its amenities to yourself.

We hope to see you on our next trip to the Andaz. And keep an eye out for more trip reports. Pura Vida!
